about

During this period, the second health care bill was presented and ready to be voted on by Congress. They had a weekend to read it before it was to be signed. In a poll, 30% of Americans said they would vote for the bill if they were in Congress, but none of them had read it. I thought about how we conform to ideas and beliefs based on others’ opinions. I wondered, “How am I conforming?” and when I was swimming the words, “He said, she said, they said” came to me. I thought about how one person says something, which turns into a personal statement of “I said” and then becomes “we said,” with an entire community’s opinion based on what “he” or “she” said. It is a dangerous dynamic. This poem begs the questions, “How are you conforming?” “What are you taking at face value?” “What are you giving away in order to conform?”
