After returning from Costa Rica, where I’d learned to scuba dive, I led a meditation group where we focused on watching the breath. Shortly after, that I took a poetry class and thought about my experience underwater, my fear, and my longing for the next breath. The line that came to me was “each breath is not promised,” and I wrote about the essence of breathing.
