I was in Miami for the Knight Cities Challenge to accept a grant. I decided to visit my friend, a nationally-renowned water-birth midwife. One day I took her car and drove to the beach. It was Father’s Day, I wanted to be with the water. I was reminded of how my Dad first brought me to the ocean and encouraged my curiosity and exploration of it. I went into the water with my goggles on. I would dive before the wave hit and turn on my back underwater and watch them crash above me. I had never known that when the water hits its surface it separates into bursts of white light. I started playing with my body and the water. Trying to fight it, swim into it, resist it, go limp like seaweed and then observe what happened each time. I felt so curious and childlike in my observations. Watching the ocean rolling above me from under water was an experience of curiously observing change and movement. Of watching life itself. Feeling every emotion mixed with laughter and tears.
